Name of Microsoft's directory service which appeared in the Windows Server 2000 operating system. The Active Directory service is based on the TCP/IP standards: DNS, LDAP, Kerberos, etc.
The Active Directory service should be understood in the general sense of the term. Meaning that, Active Directory is a directory that references people, as well as all sorts of objects, including servers, printers, applications, databases, etc.
