Access

To work with the error messages for the current application area or environment, select the Error messages option in the 4GL Editor's Repository menu.

 

The dialog box will automatically be opened at the MSG tab.

 

Note: You can minimize the dialog box by double-clicking on the title bar, which will leave only the title bar visible.

 

Data entry

Prefix

Character string used as a filter to limit the number of error messages displayed; messages will be filtered according to their prefix.

 

Example:

MSG

Displays only those messages defined with this prefix.

 

Message number

Character string used as a filter to limit the number of error messages displayed; messages will be filtered according to their number.

This field is grayed out if the special value [CORR_DEF] is selected in the Prefix filter.

 

Examples:

205

Displays message number 205.

10-100

Displays the messages numbered between 10 and 100.

-100

Displays the messages numbered below 100.

100-

Displays the messages numbered above 100.

 

Description

Character string used as a filter to limit the number of error messages displayed; messages will be filtered according to their description, the level 1 message text or the level 2 message text.

This field is grayed out if the special value [CORR_DEF] is selected in the Prefix filter.

 

Example:

*Control*

Displays only those messages containing this character string.

 

Lists

Error messages

List of the error messages verifying the fill-in criteria. The prefix, number and description are given for each message.

Extended-selection list.

 

Note: With correction environments, there may be a check mark in front of each error message name.

- A red check mark indicates that the error message is held by the default correction.

- A black check mark indicates that the error message is held by a correction other than the default correction.

 

Search mode

This combo lets you specify what the Description field should apply to: to the message description, level 1 message text or level 2 message text.

This list is grayed out if the special value [CORR_DEF] is selected in the Prefix filter.

Mandatory selection.

 

Radio buttons

These radio buttons will only be available if one or more error messages have been defined at environment and application area level, and if the active document is a private document.

 

Environment

Displays the error messages defined at environment level.

 

Application area

Displays the error messages defined for the current application area.

 

Context-sensitive menus

The fields for the prefix, message number and description

The same context-sensitive menu is called for all these fields. It contains the list of default filters and the three most recent filters set.

Default filter settings:

[ ]

No error messages.

*

All error messages.

 

Error message list
Retrieve

Where only one error message has been selected, this option is used to insert its name (prefix + number) into the source in the active document, at the cursor's current position.

This option is only active if an error message has been selected from the list.

Default option.

 

Copy

Opens a dialog box that lets you create new error messages by copying the selected error messages.

This option is only active if one or more error messages are selected from the list.

 

Create

Opens a dialog box that lets you create a new error message.

 

Modify

Opens a dialog box that lets you view or modify the characteristics of the selected error messages.

This option is only active if one or more error messages are selected from the list.

 

Delete

Opens a message box, asking you to confirm that you want to effectively delete the selected error messages.

Once this option has been validated, the error message list will be updated.

This option is only active if one or more error messages are selected from the list.

 

Individual comparison

Opens the Individual comparison dialog box for each of the selected error messages.

This dialog box lets you start the comparison of the selected error message's definition with the definition of another error message (belonging to the same or to a different environment).

 

Global comparison

Opens the Global comparison dialog box allowing to start the comparison of object list between the current and another environment.

The list of objects to be compared is initialized with the selected error messages.

 

Generate

Opens a dialog box that lets you generate the error message file.

 

Information

Opens a dialog box displaying information on the selected error message, such as the owner-software engineer's name and the dates and times it was created and last modified.

 

Hold

Opens a dialog box enabling the selected error messages to be held by the default correction.

This option is only visible in correction environments. It is only active if one or more error messages are selected in the list and the user has a default correction.
